Job Description

The Operational Tax Director/Manager will work in a newly created position directly for the Head of Operational Tax - Americas. The job holder will assist in the Americas tax risk management and tax consultancy coverage in addition to a global responsibility for the alternative business. Work will be done on a project by project basis supporting the product development teams, investment areas, fund treasury and legal. The candidate will support the Head of Operational Tax in work across business lines on projects such as FIN 48 documentation / consultation, FBAR consulting, management of tax outsourcing, while maintaining current knowledge on increased global complexities of the international taxation of hedge and investment funds.

Description

Operational Tax covers all tax issues relating to Global Asset Managements Americas traditional and global alternative businesses that are not specifically Corporate, HR / Payroll tax issues. In particular, Operational Tax includes the oversight of the tax risks inherent in the design, operation and marketing of Global AMs funds, non-consolidated SPVs and other products.
The Americas jurisdiction includes all of Global Asset Management business lines in North/South America except Real Estate. In particular, the job holder will provide coverage to Grand Cayman, Canada, South America, the United States and the global Alternative business.
Specific responsibilities:
Report directly to the Head of Operational Tax Americas.
Assist the Head of Operational Tax Americas (OPT):
To investigate and evaluate existing Operational Tax exposures in global jurisdictions, to recommend control and process improvements to the business lines.
Investigate and resolve Operational Tax ad hoc projects as they arise.
Assist in major new product and corporate projects direct involvement with product development teams
Assist in managing the Swiss, Austrian and German tax reporting for three alternative business lines with outsourced tax advisors, and FBAR reporting consultation.
Prepare summaries of tax issues, flow charts and power points of fund structures and assistance with tax educational programs for Global AM employees.
Assist in the creation of and preparation of educational materials and seminars for various business groups.
Understanding of taxation of derivatives, equity, fixed income, and alternative investment strategies
Skills

Essential Qualifications
Industry experience The candidate must have in depth knowledge of at least one part of the fund management industry, including at least a high level appreciation of i) the typical role of custodians and/or prime brokers and ii) typical fund structures, familiarity with fund management operations and fund administration functions would be an advantage.
The candidate must be knowledgeable about the US tax system, particularly of onshore and offshore funds. The candidate must have a deep understanding of US and non-US withholding tax issues, US state and local taxes, exposure to international tax issues from a US and non-US fund and investment management perspective, experience with implementation of investment management FIN 48 and exposure to transfer pricing.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with hedge fund issues including transparency and opaque funds would be a plus, including Canadian tax, and application of SOX principles to tax administration, knowledge of Regulated Investment Company qualifications and designations.
Four year bachelors degree or international equivalent in business administration or accounting
Minimum of 5 years experience with an asset management company tax department or public accounting firm in asset management tax consulting department
