Job Description

Position Summary

To take responsibility for the completion of files in a broad range of forensic accounting engagements, primarily related to business valuation, insurance or litigation accounting such as matrimonial, or estate litigation. This position is responsible for various engagements, often simultaneously. He/she is responsible for the performance and training of subordinate professional staff members.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review expert reports for client claims or disputes;
  • Compile data, analysis and recommendations with respect to loss or damage quantification in insurance or litigation claims;
  • Prepare detailed analysis of accounting records and other personal and corporate financial information;
  • Understand the business/assets being valued, and the types of valuation methods being used, as well as analyze data and prepare business valuations;
  • Conduct financial research into industry and general economic conditions, valuation multiples for relevant public companies and precedent transactions;
  • Prepare income calculations to assist counsel in determining support obligations;
  • Use an investigative mindset to understand the business and how a loss/claim affects the business;
  • Critique the work of opposing experts;
  • Review the financial statements, notes, attached schedules, management letters and tax returns, and any other documents to be used in a report;
  • Attend, observe and contribute towards discussion at any meetings with the client;
  • Consult with clients, client’s counsel and representatives of insurance companies;
  • Promptly bring any significant issues or findings in the assignment, along with recommendations for their resolution,to the attention of the Senior Manager or Partner;
  • Prepare cash flow and valuation models to arrive at estimates of value;
  • Assist counsel in the preparation of Net Family Property statements for matrimonial purposes;
  • Assist counsel in cross-examining opposing experts;
  • Participate actively in practice development activities such as meetings with referral sources, conference exhibits, writing articles; and
  • Undertake ongoing training and development to keep abreast of changes and current issues in the field of forensic accounting and business valuation;
  • Where applicable, promptly review the work of assignments completed by staff, ensuring that all queries and outstanding points have been resolved satisfactorily, prior to review by Senior Manager and/or Partner;
  • Mentor professional staff throughout the year and provide support and development to advance their careers;
  • Co-ordinate the various phases of an engagement with the Senior Manager, Partner and/or professional staff member, including engagement planning and scheduling;
  • Assign work to staff members based on their knowledge, experience and on-going professional development needs, ensuring that staff members are properly supervised during completion of each assignment, prior to commencing work; and
  • Supervise the training of staff and provide guidance and direction to staff, giving constructive criticism of their work, and offer guidance and direction.

Education and Experience:

  • CA designation;
  • CBV designation;
  • DIFA designation as asset;
  • Minimum 3-5 years of managerial experience;
  • Understanding of financial statements, personal finances, employment records, etc.;
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word and Excel;
  • The ability to perform thorough quantitative analysis;
  • An investigative mindset;
  • A keen attention to detail along with an ability to focus on the overall concepts;
  • The ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced and changing environment with tight deadlines;
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (comfortable making contact with clients; conscious of client relations and expectations);
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work efficiently within budgets so that multiple assignments can be handled simultaneously;
  • Desire to learn and pass on knowledge and experience;
  • Interest and aptitude for coaching and developing people; and
  • Takes initiative, and makes suggestions to improve the team’s functioning and morale.
